克己練心

Kendo isn’t about being better than someone else.

It’s about becoming better than yesterday.

More focused.
More disciplined.
More confident.

One practice at a time. ⚔️

Our biggest opponent is ourselves.

不與他人爭高下，
只求今天的自己，比昨天更進一步。

Throwback to a fun and energetic keiko with our visitors from Vietnam 🇻🇳, the Philippines 🇵🇭 and Hong Kong 🇭🇰!

Different dojos, different countries — brought together by the same love for Kendo. ⚔️

Plenty of smiles, good keiko, and lots of sweat on and off the floor. 😆💦

Thank you for visiting and training with us at Harimau Kendo Club. We hope to cross shinai again soon! 🐯

Malaysia Open 2026.

A long day.
Many matches.
Many moments in between.

A few memories from the shiai-jo, through the lens. 📷

Until the next one.

Congratulations to all our club members who passed their Dan grading last weekend! 🤩🎉🥳

And to everyone who stepped onto the floor and gave it their best — well done too. Every grading is part of the journey, whether we pass this time or come back stronger the next.

Keep training, keep learning, and keep moving forward together. 💪🏻

See you at the dojo!

A long day at the Malaysia Open 2026.

Congratulations to everyone who stepped onto the shiai-jo today, and especially to those who came home with a medal. Well deserved! 👏🏻

And to those who didn’t get the result you hoped for — keep going.

Every match gives us something to learn, something to work on, and another reason to come back stronger.

Win or lose, what matters is that we showed up, gave our best, and gained another experience together.

Rest well, reflect, and we try again. 💪🏻

A weekend of learning.

Five members of Harimau Kendo Club had the privilege of participating in the recent seminar organised by the Malaysia Kendo Association and conducted by Kamei Toru Sensei, Hanshi 8th Dan.

Through his demonstrations, explanations and guidance, we were reminded that there is always more to observe, understand and refine in our kendo.

We are grateful for the opportunity to learn from Kamei Sensei, and to share the floor with fellow kendoka over the weekend.

The seminar may have ended, but the learning continues in every keiko.

We were honoured to welcome Toru Kamei Sensei, 8th Dan Oliver Sensei from 🇸🇬 & Huang Sensei from 🇨🇳 , to our dojo today.

Thank you, Sensei, for taking the time to visit us, share your valuable advice and insights with our members.

It was a pleasure having you with us, and we hope to meet again soon!

Kendo may look like an individual journey.

We step onto the floor alone.
We face our own fears, frustrations, and limitations.

But we never truly grow alone.

There is always someone beside us —

a teacher who guides,
a senior who encourages,
a training partner who challenges us,
a friend who reminds us to keep going.

Sometimes, all it takes is a few words of encouragement.
Sometimes, simply knowing that someone believes in us is enough.

This is what makes a dojo more than a place to practise.

We train together.
We learn from one another.
We grow together.

And somewhere along the way,
we become a community.

Sunday keiko, followed by a BBQ gathering. 🏊‍♂️🍗🍕🍢

A little post-training gathering with the HKC family — because sometimes the best part of training happens at the second dojo. 🥳

Thank you to everyone who brought food, helped with the BBQ, and made the afternoon a good one!

What’s your favourite therapy?

Mine comes with a shinai. ⚔️

For a little while, the noise disappears.
Just breathe, focus, strike — and be present.

KENDO. My kind of therapy.

“The concept of kendo is to discipline the human character through the application of the principles of the katana.”
— All Japan Kendo Federation

Every practice reveals our imperfections — timing, hesitation, impatience, fear. But perfection was never the starting point.

Every strike, every mistake, every lesson — we keep shaping ourselves.

Not just becoming better at kendo.
Becoming better through it.

The sword shapes more than technique.
It shapes who we’re becoming.

Congratulations to all our club members who passed their kyu grading today! 🤩🎉 🥳

From our young kenshi taking their first steps in grading to our adults continuing to challenge themselves — today was proof of what consistent practice, courage, and dedication can do. Proud of every one of you.

A big thank you to our instructors, examiners, senpai, parents, and everyone who helped make the day possible. 🙏🏻

Keep training, keep growing. Onwards to the next milestone! 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻

Before the match,

there are no enemies.

Only two people,
ready to give their very best.

Neither will hold back—

because only through sincere effort
can we truly test ourselves.

One may win.

One may lose.

But both leave with something more valuable:

experience,

humility,

and a deeper understanding of themselves.

In kendo, we have a saying:

交剣知愛

“Through crossed swords, we come to understand one another.”

Every opponent becomes a teacher.

Every victory reminds us to stay humble.

Every defeat teaches us to rise again.

Little by little, this is how character is forged.

Growth can feel like a journey we take alone.

Kendo teaches us otherwise.

Behind every confident strike

was once a beginner,

who needed someone to believe in them

a teacher who shared their knowledge,

a senior who offered encouragement,

a training partner who stood beside them,

practice after practice.

None of us walks this path alone.

Sometimes, the greatest gift we can give

isn’t instruction.

It’s belief.

Because when someone believes in us,

we begin to believe in ourselves.

And one day,

it becomes our turn

to believe in someone else.

People often admire the result.

The perfect strike.

The medal.

The victory.

But kendo teaches us to value something else.

The countless repetitions that no one applauds.

The same movement.

Again.

And again.

Every practice may seem ordinary.

But over time,

ordinary practice shapes extraordinary people.

There are no shortcuts.

Only the quiet decision to return,

and begin again.

As the saying goes:

十年磨一劍。

For ten years, we sharpen the sword.

But more importantly,

we sharpen ourselves.

People often think courage is the absence of fear.

Kendo teaches us something different.

There comes a moment when preparation ends.

Hesitation no longer matters.

Only the decision to step forward remains.

In kendo, this spirit is known as Sutemi (捨て身)—not reckless sacrifice, but the willingness to let go of fear, doubt, and attachment to the outcome, and commit wholeheartedly.

Not because victory is guaranteed,

but because growth begins the moment we stop waiting for certainty.

The same is true beyond the dojo.

Life will always ask us to trust what we have learned, give our best, and move forward without holding back.

Because the greatest battles we face…

are often the moments we choose to fully commit.

Sunday keiko recap.

A morning filled with drills, jigeiko, and great company.

Thank you to our friends from Indonesia @secretmarcel @iamelisahartono and @peteshiroku for training with us. Always a pleasure to share the dojo together.

See you at the next keiko!

People often think wearing the bogu is simply preparing for practice.

It is much more than that.

The armour protects our body.

But before we protect our body, we must first prepare our heart.

Kendo reminds us to cultivate virtues that reach far beyond the dojo.

仁 (Jin) — Compassion to those around us.

義 (Gi) — The courage to do what is right.

禮 (Rei) — Respect in every action.

智 (Chi) — The wisdom to keep learning.

信 (Shin) — Integrity in both word and deed.

These are not lessons for the dojo alone.

They are values we strive to carry into our families, our work, our friendships, and our daily lives.

Because when practice ends, we leave the dojo without our armour.

But our character remains.

#kendomalaysia #劍道 #HarimauKendoClub #martialarts #neverstoplearning

People often think Rei (礼) is just about bowing.

It is much more than that.

Every practice begins with Rei and ends with Rei.

It is respect for one another.
Respect for our training partners.
Respect for our equipment.
Respect for ourselves.

In Kendo, Rei is not only shown in how we bow.

It is reflected in how we prepare, how we train, and how we carry ourselves—both inside and outside the dojo—cultivating humility in our daily lives.

Because before we learn how to use the sword, we first learn how to respect.

People often think kendo is about hitting.

It’s actually about knowing when not to rush.

It’s about:
• Staying calm under pressure.
• Respecting your opponent.
• Controlling your emotions.
• Moving with purpose.
• Growing through every challenge.

Kendo teaches strength through discipline—not aggression.

Whether you’re a child, an adult, or discovering martial arts for the first time, kendo welcomes everyone who is willing to learn.
